Some find it difficult enough today to deal with the little glitches that show up during their day, a little stress now and then never hurt anyone, right? and  I've heard that it's supposed to make us stronger. Well if daily little glitches don't stress you out, the current and downward spiraling rate of our economy eventually will.

From paying more at the pump (in most places now over $4.00 a gallon), to the high costs of home fuel oil, electricity and food, we are all in for big trouble.

If something doesn't break soon, the world will experience the largest depression it has ever seen.  Why do I say this? well think about it.  The United States alone is right now mostly oil dependent, meaning we NEED oil to survive and thrive.  Oil Shortages, as you can see, starts to affect big businesses.  Like car manufacturers and airlines.  Putting thousands of people out of work and making travel a nightmare.  So now you take all of these people who are now out of work and compile them with the already increasing jobless rate.   If something doesn't happen with fuel oil soon, we better hope this winter is warmer!

Then there's electricity.  Seen you're electric bill lately?  I was shocked when I saw mine this past month, and it's not going to get better.  With fuel oil on the rise people will now turn to electricity for home cooking, heating and such.  This will in turn inflate the prices and usage of electricity.   I expect to see many more power outages coming this year as a result from this usage increase.  Which in turn will then again start showing it's devastating affects on big business.  All businesses rely on electricity.  If the rates start to increase at the same levels we see fuel oil you will see a major cut in peoples work week, and find more people working from home, or worse, businesses closings because they can't afford to pay their bills and cover overhead costs. In turn this will bring about another increase in the jobless rate.

Then there is the increasing costs on our food products.  Don't expect to see cuts here any time soon, especially on the foods we import from other countries.  High fuel costs will inflate the prices on these food items so much that people here will stop buying them.  The United States will stop importing to save on oil costs which in turn will put our shipping industries in hardship and out of business along with those businesses in other countries.  As people begin to see the increases in food prices and hear that the United States is slowing down on their imports from other countries you will begin to see more food hoarding occur.  My advice for you this summer is grow your own, or start your own food co-op program where a few of you get together and plant a huge garden for all to enjoy and harvest through the tough months ahead.

With our jobless rate already climbing, throw in all of those hard working students from college that have either graduated, or out on summer break, and the high school kids that have reached working age, and the businesses cutting back or closing.  We now have a recipe for unemployment disaster.

My advice to all is to start planning.

We know fuel costs are already high, so car pool, public transit, bike it or hike it.  Right now it's better than not having a job!

Note:  Use public transit sparingly since these areas will also start showing signs of fare increases, and route cuts due to the high costs of fuel.

As for electricity try and cut back as much as possible.  Don't leave unnecessary lights on, if you have any extra refrigerators that are running continuously try condensing your items so you're only using one. Only use air conditioners as a last resort unless your elderly or ill.

To help with the high costs of food, if you're not going to grow your own (which is the ideal way to go), try local farmers and farmers markets.  They are great resources for fresh fruits and veggies.  Some farmers will sell beef, chicken and eggs as well.  It doesn't hurt to look around to get the best price, and you're helping out a farmer who is also struggling to survive.

If you've ever given thought to becoming a vegetarian now may be the best time.  As I have been told there are different types of vegetarians so you'll have to do the research.  But it may be the way to go at this point in time.

The most important thing right now is to help each other out.  If you have more, share it!  It won't kill you to extend some kindness to others in need, and it just may save your soul.

A BONUS is here for those of you who are adventurous enough to tread these untested waters.  Listen to the news and find these businesses who are cutting back on their work week, and look for a job in your expertise area that you can do for them from your home.
